The artist, a young adult woman with white hair kept in a pixie and glasses, sits in a velvet chair in front of a brick background.

I’m Hannah Wilson

An Artist and Biological Illustrator based in Raleigh, NC. My work thrives on the intersection between nature and illustration, taking occasional dives into the truly nerdy. I’ve completed a variety of work for clients including custom paintings, publication and book illustrations, educational design, character illustration, sequential art, biological diagrams, and animations.

My fine art explores the natural world, and the darkness within it. Inciting themes and exploration of mortality, the cycle of life in the natural world, inter-dependance, the occult, and delves into the fantastical.

As a lifelong nerd with a passion for table top rpgs and manga. I’ve also worked in character illustration and sequential art. You can frequently find me selling work at comic conventions across the US.

My other passions including travel, hiking, and baking. If you can't find me in the studio working or at a museum, I'm probably out on the trails somewhere. Of course, the hikes are always interrupted by stopping to sketch the latest natural find.

Why Spoonwood?

Family has been central along my journey to become a natural science artist. As the translation of my maiden name from German to English, Spoonwood is my way of giving back to my family. Now every piece I put out under that name is a reminder of what has carried me so far.

The artist stands among a group of people smiling and looking at eachother. From left to right they are, her husband, the artist, her mother, her father, and her brother.
